My life is average

Sunday, August 26, 2012

I wrote an autobiography in Year 6. Not that I had a lot going on in my life at the age of ten, but it was a class assignment and I completed it with a big smile on my face. I scanned in photos from my childhood, discovered stories from my childhood, and delved through the memories of my childhood. It was a good class assignment. (I got 3 stars for it and named it "Step by Step".)

So I'm no longer 10 years old but I still haven't lived enough life to write a full on story of my life, or influenced enough people to actually want to read it. My life is average.

I clearly remember the very first sentence of my autobiography: "When I was one, I nearly died." Although it later got ticks for an "engaging start", I didn't have much else to write about and my life felt very... average. At the time, I didn't see anything I'd done as exciting enough for an autobiography.  I thought all the other kids would be scribbling about their exotic holidays and numerous awards for football and dancing and everything inbetween. Little did I know that an average life is actually very exciting; it was then and it still is now. Sure I'm not a platinum selling artist or even an artist, I suck at sport and I still haven't explored as much of the world as I'd like to, I don't have millions of followers on Twitter who actually read what I tweet, I'm not the first (wo)man to Mars, but it's my life.

Like the title of my book, I'm still going through life "step by step". Corny huh? But even my 10 year old self knew the appropriateness of the title. The current step consists of stress, hard work which will hopefully later pay off, and finding out my real interests and passions...discovering myself. I've discovered writing, for one. And I have my fingers crossed for the next step in life.. who knows what could happen? (Again with the cheesiness, I know!) Despite the fact that my last autobiography was only about 12 pages, I know for sure that by the time I next
properly reflect on my life, I'll have a lot more to write about. Because it doesn't have to be stereotypically "exciting" or the kind of thing you see in the movies or read in the magazines. Who said average was a bad thing anyway?

But if I do  ever release an autobiography, you'd better buy it.
