Red Carpet Review: MTV VMAs 2016
Tuesday, August 30, 2016
Before we talk about Beyoncé, Beyoncé, Beyoncé, there were
actually other people present at the MTV Video Music Awards, did you know? Red
carpet fashion is always the thing I look out for first, before the
performances and winners. It seems this year was the Year of Sheer, with
outfits you should only really pay half price for because there’s so much
missing! Most guests went for the same barely-there vibe, so it’s no surprise
my favourites were those who were slightly different from those (but different
in a good way).
But we can talk about Queen Bey too. Personally, I think she
should’ve rocked up in a lemonade-inspired dress, but she went for an Italian
Francesco Scognamiglio couture gown – complete with feathered wings and adorable sidekick Blue Ivy.
In true diva style, there were many outfit changes, and my
personal favourite of hers was a bridal gown by Yolan Cris. I wouldn’t wear it
to my wedding, but I can appreciate all the lacy detail.
Elsewhere, there was a sheer amount of sheer. Kim Kardashian-West,
Rita Ora, Britney and Hailey Baldwin all went for black borderline gothic
looks. Britney went one step further and went further than sheer in a Julien McDonald dress. But she does
look great doesn’t she?
You’d think there was some sort of little black dress code, as Zara
Larrson went big on shape, Ariana Grande wore the bardot hem everybody’s wearing in a clever trouser piece, and Fifth Harmony
colour co-ordinated rather well.
My Red Carpet Best Dressed
Actress-turned-pop-megastar-but-still-an-actress Hailee Steinfeld has real style credentials and it's refreshing to actually see daring colour on the red carpet. It's Balmain and quite clearly so, but she's also paired it with summer beach waves. Then we have Nick Jonas with a textured bomber jacket which just confirms that we should keep wearing bomber jackets forever and ever. I would very happily wear this. Model Taylor Hill wore a Moschino pink sequined dress which kind of reminds me of the primary school disco days.. And actress Holland Roden looked like she was auditioning for X-Men in a superhero-worthy cape, but it makes for one of the most striking power-looks of the red carpet.
Finally, take note for prom next year! The gymnasts from Team USA looked great. I love a bit of embellishment...
