Beview Edit: Documentary Challenge

Wednesday, February 15, 2017

Big exclusive alert! One of my new year's resolutions was to watch a wider range of films, ie. not just the big mainstream blockbusters. And within that, I'm challenging myself to watch more documentaries, starting with these two, and you can follow my journey on the blog in the coming months...

Gleason - Released 14th March

You may remember the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, and the ALS-related research breakthroughs that followed. The upcoming documentary Gleason is a true story of former American football star Steve Gleason who was diagnosed with the motor neurone disease in 2011. It's about him deciding to live his life to the fullest particularly with a new child on the way, and trying to find his true purpose in life in the following years despite the struggles. It sounds like an inspiring journey indeed.

Letters from Baghdad - Released 21st April

Ok this one's not out for a while yet, but it's about Gertrude Bell, a name you may not be familiar with. She's a figure of modern-day history known for shaping (literally with borders too) the destiny of Iraq after World War I. It's been well-received at a bunch of festivals already, is voiced by Tilda Swinton and the script is entirely authentic with the words straight from the hands of Bell and her contemporaries through letters, diaries and documents. It may well be history but there's something about it that may strike a chord today. I think a history lesson could be good for us all.
