Hey mum...

Sunday, March 10, 2013

As you will undoubtedly be aware of by now, Mother's Day is today! (For us UK folk at least, anyway.) If you haven't already, now is the time to rush out and buy flowers and attempt a flowery message on a card. If there's simply no time, a nice cuppa and a big bear hug go a lo-ong way.

Our media sure loves the idea of interesting mothers: the pushy one, the best friend one, the bonkers one (think Regina George's mom in Mean Girls), the wise one (let's face it; most are)... Just at the top of my mind, there are the TV mums, like the scandal-ridden ones of EastEnders, the frank hilariousness of Judy Geller (aka Monica and Ross's mother), the movie moms...supermum Mrs Incredible/Elastigirl of The Incredibles (who has actually most recently been named "Top Screen Mum", stepmother of 7 Maria, Freaky moms, ass-kicking Sarah Connor... But there's nothing more touching and sentimental than the ones that we can relate to, and the ones that - quite literally - hit home. Which is why I still remember the soppy P&G ad 2 years ago about being the "Proud Sponsor of Mums". Or "moms", depending on where you're at. And why, even though it's only a quick 30 second ad, I still remember having to wipe away a shy tear or two.

There are, according to Youtube, a whole load of mummy videos from P&G but this is the one that sticks with me. Never necessarily the focus, but always there. The sacrifice of spending money on herself, in favour of buying something just for you. Allowing you to shamelessly wardrobe-raid for years (and not scolding too much when you break that 20 year old belt), and still every time you visit home. Giving up the last piece of *insert her favourite food here* because she'll enjoy it more watching you eat it instead. Being there at your beck and call after your operation when you are physically unable to eat and speak for weeks... Mrs Incredible may have been voted the best mum on-screen, but off-screen is where it counts and every mother is simply Incredible.

What I'm trying to say is this:

Hey mum...

Thank you.

Bev x
