Music Review - New year, new tunes. Ed Sheeran's back!

Saturday, January 07, 2017

2016 was apparently a relatively quiet year for Ed Sheeran (bar his hilarious cameo in Bridget Jones's Baby and a few others) but turns out he's been busy making the sweet sound of his brand new music. We can probably expect the release of ÷ (Divide), his third studio album, sometime in the very near future, starting with Shape of You and Castle on the Hill. They have two very different vibes, showcasing just how versatile Ed is, and are almost guaranteed to hit the top spots of the chart next week. Are they good? Uh - yeah.

I'm a big Sheeran fan and have been since stumbling across The A Team in those early Spotify days. I went to the launch gig of his debut album +, and he's been surprising me ever since. These two new singles may not be up there in my All Time Faves list, but they are worthy, refreshing and a promising taste of things to come. Welcome back, Ed!

Castle on the Hill

Castle on the Hill is a sweet soft-rock "love song to Suffolk" with lyrics like "driving at 90 down those country lanes"...which has recently been discouraged by Suffolk Police (lol). It has a Springsteen-esque bounce and chorus, with touching and reflective lyrics dedicated to his high school mates. He may be a global-mega-superstar but it's nice to see he's still in touch with his roots. It gradually builds up and I can see it as a big singalong anthemic crowd-pleaser at his upcoming gigs and festivals. The beautiful high falsetto towards the end reminds me of one of my favourite singers Gavin James too.

Shape of You

Shape of You is a lot more "pop music now"-sounding and you'd be forgiven for thinking it was a Sia track. It was originally intended as a collaboration with Rihanna, but I'm pretty glad he kept it all to himself. Musically, it's pretty simple with the same two notes in the background throughout, but if anyone can make it work it's Mr Sheeran with his loop pedal. I can hear the dance remixes and non-stop radio airplay already, but while it's ridiculously catchy, it's not exactly the most original sounds of the moment. With the main line of "I'm in love with your body", this is no exception to being lyrically bold and unafraid to hold anything back.
