Phwoar what scorchers! A sneak peek at summer at the cinema

Monday, July 18, 2016

We've got Dory, about to cross the shores into the UK cinemas at the end of this month (it's been doing swimmingly well everywhere so far), the huge Spielberg adaptation of The BFG, the eagerly-anticipated return of Jason Bourne, Suicide Squad, Pete's Dragon, and so much more. Firstly, a side-note on the term "eagerly-anticipated" - it's such a press/journalistic term and I use it a lot - but it doesn't even BEGIN to sum up how I'm feeling about all these summer releases!

Leicester Square's been permanently buzzing with the red carpet arrivals of these superstars (I'm talking about the films, not the celebs) - just the other day I was walking by, and Ellen DeGeneres was just there in front of me for Finding Dory.

To gear up for hiding from the heat in the comforts of a cinema, here are some previews, interviews and exclusive clips from some of my most eagerly-anticipated film arrivals.

The BFG

The BFG, starring Mark Rylance in this childhood classic, is in cinemas this Friday 22nd July. Here's what happened over the weekend at the premiere...

It's not just the film I'm excited about too - to celebrate the film launch, 100 years since the birth of Roald Dahl, and to celebrate the power of dreams (yes really), a Dream Jar Trail has been commissioned across London. In particular, it's raising money and awareness for Save the Children so it's a very worthy cause. What is the Dream Jar Trail? I hear you cry. It's the dreams of icons like director Steven Spielberg, Professor Stephen Hawking, Dame Helen Mirren, Simon Cowell, Niall Horan, and lo-o-ads more, being brought to life through art installations which you can find around the city. You can find out more about it here, and it's going on til the end of August so would definitely make a fun day out for all the family, or simply if you want to londer. ('Londer' is a word I invented for wandering around London but we can come back to that another day.)

Finding Dory

We're desperate for the return of the forgetful fish as she attempts to find herself. Or something like that. It's been well over a decade since we lost Nemo, and even though I'm not a natural fan of sequels when the original is just so damn good, I've been assured this is a sequel worth waiting for. The ultimate fish squad return, with new additions in the form of Idris Elba's sea lion, Ty Burrell as a whale and many more. Will young-Bev be happy with Disney/Pixar's efforts? Disney have been smashing it lately with films that adults and kids-alike can enjoy, and whilst I'm a child of the Finding Nemo generation, I'm excited for a new generation of Dorys. We only have to wait another 10 days or so (29th July) for it. Here's us, counting down...

Jason Bourne

Yes Jason! It came as a bit of a surprise last November (to me, anyway) that there would be a sequel to the original trilogy starring Matt Damon again. I haven't forgotten The Bourne Legacy, but I'm happy to move on with the story because the standard is so consistently high. This time, Alicia Vikander has joined as a CIA agent, along with Tommy Lee Jones as CIA Director. What skeletons does Bourne have left in his closet? What has he been doing since his "death" all those years (nearly 10!!) ago?  We're about to find out - Jason Bourne hits UK cinemas on 27th July.

Suicide Squad

The hype has been building up for such a long time now. You're looking at a group of anti-heroes, possibly the worst-equipped to fight crime. But that's where it gets interesting. The word "super" applies but they're no heroes; Margot Robbie will tell you that alright. Throw in a mix of Will Smith, Jared Leto, Cara Delevingne and more, and you have a DC film that will hopefully be miles better than Batman v. Superman earlier this year.

Pete's Dragon

And now, something else for the kids! It's a remake of the 1977 original, out on 12th August. Is the dragon real or is it a figment of his imagination? Bryce Dallas Howard and Karl Urban are amongst the names you may recognise bringing this to life. Personally I'm looking forward to some animation and talented child-acting from Oakes Fegley, who only made his acting debut in 2014.
